Watch out for: Katayanagi Twins

Watch out for: Katayanagi Twins

Eight years into their career, the Katayanagi Twins should already be on your radar.

No, not the Japanese twin brothers from the Scott Pilgrim franchise. I’m talking about the explosive dance-music duo from Auckland, New Zealand: Rain and China Katayanagi.

While plenty of DJs pass through my TikTok feed, there was something different about these two. Maybe it’s the seamless genre-hopping, or maybe it’s their carefree, unforced style — either way, I’m grateful that a viral Syber set in Perth introduced me to them.

Like most SYBER features, the set was a melting pot of world-influenced club music: hip-hop, amapiano, baile funk, Jersey club, trap, and plenty more — all stitched together with an ease that feels instinctive rather than curated.

Fast facts:

  • It's no wonder the two ooze style: they're born to a DJ dad and fashion designer mother.
  • The two are heavily inspired by Hip Hop and the funky 80’s, POP 90’s, and eclectic 00’s.
  • In February 2025, they were featured in Boiler Room Aotearoa, performing as part of an all-Māori lineup broadcast celebrating Māori artists.
  • The duo have played all over the world, including several festivals such as Glastonbury Festival and Rinse FM.
