17 Shows and Movies I Watched This May

Are you more into movies or tv shows?

I think I'm more of a documentary and tv show kind of gal, although I'm slowly leaning into things that prioritize good writing over reality trash.

I will say, though, that I still love my reality tv and quite enjoyed having a few of these on in the background while crafting and cooking.

Here are some shows and movies I watched this May, that I recommend:

Ripple

If you need to cry, watch Ripple. I didn't know what I was getting into, so I'm going to give you a warning: you will cry. Following a cast of characters whose lives intertwine, everything from the acting to the storyline is just spot on. 9.5/10.

Perfil Falso

Three seasons and I wish there was more! Originally in Spanish, this show has so much drama. It follows a woman who meets Mr. Perfect on a dating app, and decides to surprise him when her dreams become the opposite of what she'd imagined. SUCH a great watch. 9/10

The Crash

I'm sure by now you've heard of Mackenzie Shirilla and you're either engrossed or over it. If you haven't, here's the rundown: 17 year old Mackenzie Shirilla gets into a car accident with her boyfriend and his friend. Was it on purpose? This show made me understand the importance of strict parenting, and what happens when kids raise kids. 5/10

Mean Girl Murders: Under the Influence

Another Mackenzie Shirilla documentary, though this time painting her in a different light. To be honest, I only watched this one because people online were saying it was "dramatically different." Honestly? Not that good of a watch, just watch the TikTok recaps. 2/10

Trust Me: The False Prophet

This was a great binge while I was crafting. It follows a couple who've infiltrated a religious cult, and how they manage to save some of the girls. While a good binge, it does make me wonder... did they all appreciate saving? Like obviously, yes, they were brainwashed... but did they want to be brainwashed? Idk, don't cancel me. All I'm saying is that he still has followers and some of them seem to love living as if they're chosen by a prophet. (I'd still want to be saved and not live like that, but everyone has different worldviews, you know?) 7/10

The Manny

I kind of hate how much I enjoyed The Manny. A great background show for crafting and cooking, the Mexican comedy romance has it all: laughs, drama, and a storyline that is just the right amount of corny. 8.5/10

Untold (Series)

The Untold documentaries share the many perspectives following high-profile scandals. I recommend The Life and Death of Lamar Odom (poor Khloe), Chess Mates (I think he cheated!!), and The Girlfriend Who Didn't Exist (literally following a guy who had his life ruined by a catfish.) 9/10

Ladies First

I watched this movie with my partner, and I was honestly afraid that it was going to be a bit too overdone, to the point that it was a bit of an eye roller. Much to my surprise, it was so well done. Sacha Baron Cohen really knows how to parody, and I loved the attention to detail -- check out the background names and shops when you're watching. I'd love to see the film remade with the genders swapped. Not as a feature film, but as a social commentary of just how boring the movie would've been if it was set in our currently reality. 6/10

In Her Shoes

If you're a hot mess, you need to watch this film. Following a girl who needs to mature and grow up, it's definitely a relatable movie for girls in their late 20s who haven't quite figured it out. 8/10

The Witcher

I'm only on episode four of The Witcher, but I'm really liking it! My partner is currently playing the video game so it's interesting watching along and seeing how they portray the characters. I do have a friend who told me her man can't watch it because it doesn't follow the game enough, so there's a warning to you. I do find it a little confusing, but I'm sure it'll all make sense in the end. 8/10

Jujutsu Kaisen Movie

Hear me out: anime isn't just a kid's cartoon. In between seasons one and two of Jujutsu Kaisen, my partner told me that it was time to watch the movie. "There's a movie?" I asked. "Yeah, it's one of the most popular anime's right now." Turns out, I totally get why there's a movie. Whether you've seen JJK before or not, I recommend giving this a watch. We watched it in two parts. 8/10

Worst Ex Ever Season Two

I genuinely don't understand how people in prison for murder can have fans just because they're attractive. Seriously. I totally understand how this man was able to get away with abusive relationships, but I don't understand people who are able to look past his past. Watch this documentary and let me know if you'd be one of the many still sending him fan mail. I sure wouldn't, jeez. 7/10

Beef Season Two

My friend Mandy had been trying to get our friend group to watch Beef for weeks. With nothing else jumping out at me, I gave it a shot. Turns out, it's pretty darn good. While the first few episodes were a bit of a slog to get through, I found myself hooked into the latter half. The ending was also unpredictable, which I love. 8/10

Forces of Nature

Was this a must-watch? Absolutely not. Was it a good thing to have in the background while cooking? Absolutely. The movie follows a soon-to-be-married man who ends up on a road trip to his wedding, stuck with an unhinged woman as his passenger. Although the characters are a little annoying, the story as a whole is alright. 4/10

Love on the Spectrum

I know you've heard of Love on the Spectrum, and this season doesn't disappoint. From the unscripted dialogue to the cut scenes, it's no wonder this show has taken over the world. I also love the representation and how the television show depicts autism truly being a spectrum. Also, Dani, giiiiirl, get it. 9/10

Homicide: Los Angeles

Homicide: Los Angeles is a docuseries that follows notorious murder cases in California. It's impactful because not only does it focus on the victims and those close to them, but also the detectives and prosecutors who cracked the cases. 9/10

Homicide: New York

With each episode following a different case, you won't be let down with this short series. The 9/11 episode was incredibly hard-hitting, especially being someone raised in New York. I like this series because they talk about past, present, and future, as well as the need to debrief and forgive yourself. 9/10
